Piroxicam (Feldene)NSAIDs
INDICATION
A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory
and painkiller used to treat arthritis.
SIDE EFFECTS
GI bleeding, ulcers, gastritis,
nausea, abdominal pain, anorexia, anaemia, itching, rash,
dizziness, ringing in the ears, increased bleeding time,
headache, swelling, kidney dysfunction, elevated liver enzymes,
and photosensitivity.
INTERACTIONS and PRECAUTIONS
- Anticoagulants (Warfarin)
can increase bleeding if taken concurrently.
- Lithium may have INCREASED
levels.
- Use with ACE inhibitors
(captopril, lisinopril, enalapril) decrease the ACE
inhibitor effect.
- Use with diuretics can
decrease the diuretic effect.
- Use with aspirin, cortisone
medications, or alcohol can promote the risk of stomach
ulcers and bleeding.
- Use with beta-blockers
(propranolol, metoprolol, nadolol, labetalol, carteolol)
can decrease the antihypertensive effect.
USUAL DOSE
Adults: oral, 20 mg once a day or 10 mg twice a
day.
Paediatrics: dosage not established.
