Indomethacin NSAIDs

(BRITISH) UK Trade name products: (Indocid) (Indomax) (Indomod) (Flexin)

(AMERICAN) US Trade name products which contain indomethacin include: (Apo-Indomethacin) (Indameth) (Indocid) (Indocid Sr) (Indocin) (Indocin Sr) (Novomethacin) (Zendole)

INDICATION

A nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory medication used to relieve fever, pain, and inflammation.

SIDE EFFECTS

Anaemia, decrease white blood cells, bruising, low platelet count, headache, dizziness, depression, confusion, drowsiness, seizures, fainting, high blood pressure, swelling, blurred vision, eye damage, decreased hearing, ringing in the ears, nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, anorexia, ulcers, GI bleeding, kidney failure, blood in the urine, increased potassium levels and increased liver enzymes, itching, rash, and difficulty breathing.

INTERACTIONS and PRECAUTIONS

  1. Aspirin can decrease the effects of Indomethacin.
  2. Diflunisal and probenecid may increase the effects of Indomethacin.
  3. Lithium can have elevated blood levels leading to toxicity.
  4. Thiazide (hydrochlorothiazide, chlorothiazide) diuretics and frusemide may decrease the therapeutic effect of both medications.
  5. Triamterene can lead to kidney problems.
  6. Use with ACE inhibitors (captopril, lisinopril, enalapril) may decrease the ACE inhibitor effect.
  7. Use with anticoagulants (Warfarin) increase risk of bleeding.
  8. Use with beta-blockers (propranolol, metoprolol, labetalol, carteolol) can decrease their antihypertensive effect.

USUAL DOSE

Adults: oral, 25-50 mg two to four times a day.

Paediatrics: oral, 1.5-2.5 mg/kg body weight per day administered in three or four doses.
