An old-established settlement whose name is derived from the Norse thing-vollr, meaning assembly place, Dingwall is a former market town now bypassed by the main road to the north. Its main shopping street is pedestrianised and pleasant. The Dingwall Museum has a variety of displays illustrating the historic events of the town, such as the last execution for witchcraft in 1727. The town is a convenient base for exploring the Highlands
